“When two traditions as deep and distinct as Kannauj and Grasse finally meet — not to compete, but to converse — the result is something neither could have made alone.”
— Rajnish Kumar, Founder, RUMI Fine Fragrances
The Obsession
"I knew what I wanted. I just needed someone who would not try to change it into something European."
Our Founder had spent years building his understanding of perfumery the slow way — not through textbooks, but through wearing, collecting, and living with fine fragrances. He grew up with the attars of Kannauj: the deg-bhapka distillations that had been made the same way since the Mughal courts first patronised the craft. He understood, in a way only someone who has inhaled that world fully can, what Indian perfumery was capable of.
When he set out to build RUMI fine fragrances, he had a clear founding principle: the attar would not be a footnote. It would be the foundation. But he also knew that without French structural discipline — the considered top-heart-base architecture of the grandes maisons — the attars would remain beautiful without being transcendent. He needed a collaborator, not a contractor.
He wrote to François Robert.
The Quest
"The attars from Kannauj gave me pause. I had worked with Indian ingredients before — always as secondary notes. Rajnish was proposing something different: the attar as foundation, not flourish."
François Robert is not simply a perfumer. He is the continuation of a Lineage. His grandfather created fragrances during the golden age of French perfumery. His father, Guy Robert continued that work with the same precision and patience. François grew up with raw materials the way other children grow up with books — learning their names before he could spell them, understanding their character before he could explain why.
When Rajnish's letter arrived, François was not looking for a new collaboration. He was particular about his work — about who he created with and why. But the samples enclosed with the letter changed things. The Kannauj Rose absolute, distilled Sandalwood, and earthy Vetiver all carried a depth that his lab in France had simply never produced. He replied within the week.
The Alchemy
"French perfumery prizes structure. Indian attar-making prizes depth. We had to find the language that honoured both."
Their first meeting lasted eight hours. François had brought trial accords built around Rose Sandalwood and Vetiver. Rajnish had brought attars distilled by families who had been working the same copper degs for six generations. Between them, at the lab in Mumbai, they began to understand what these fragrances could become.
The dialogue was not always easy. French perfumery prizes structure — the top-heart-base architecture, the carefully mapped evolution of a scent. Indian attar-making prizes depth — the slow revelation, the absence of hurry, the fragrance that breathes differently in the afternoon than it did in the morning. François wanted to impose form. Rajnish wanted to preserve soul.
The three fragrances they created together are the record of that negotiation — and of the mutual respect that made it possible.
